The Teaching Studio is the professional development consulting group of The Learning Community, a highly successful urban public school in Central Falls, RI.  The Learning Community was founded in 2004 to serve as an excellent school and to systematically share what works with other public schools.

What Makes The Teaching Studio Unique?

Most professional development is offered across multiple grade levels, is removed from classroom practice, and leaves the teacher to adapt the work back to her specific students.  The Teaching Studio brings targeted, grade-level specific professional development directly to teachers in the their classrooms through one-on-one coaching, professional development workshops at their grade level, and units of study and lessons tested in a real urban school.   Our professional development works because we emphasize:

• Every school is unique and any solution must be adapted to the specific needs of each school;
• Teachers are the key driver to school success –  our work is led by teachers, for teachers and is informed by real classroom practice.  Listening to teachers and following up is one of the most important parts of any effort at change;
• To be implemented quickly, solutions needs to be tailored to the needs of each grade level and shared in formats that teachers can use — key units of study, lessons plans and graphic organizers;
• Every classroom needs to be surrounded by systems that will support teacher effectiveness – schools need strong systems for students who fall behind, strong systems to engage families and strong systems of social and emotional support.

We’ve gained national attention for our work with Central Falls public schools, their teachers, specialists and administrators.  We’re proud of our success together, and we will continue to deepen that work on behalf of students.

Our Clients
Our clients range from schools and districts to organizations working with young people.  Examples include the  East Providence public schools, Westerly public schools and the Providence After School Alliance.  We are also engaged in a major multi-year partnership with the Woonsocket and Smithfield public schools to enhance reading instruction.
